Created in 1899 by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen for the daily newspaper Le Journal, this original advertising poster announces the publication of Dubut de Laforest’s serialized novel "The White Slave Trade" (in fact fictional). Printed by Charles Verneau, it stands as a testament to the golden age of illustrated newspapers and popular serialized fiction during the Belle Époque.
The artist’s fluid and expressive line, combined with a delicate palette punctuated by red accents, gives the composition a remarkable visual presence. The poster perfectly illustrates Steinlen’s talent for capturing character and distilling an entire narrative into a single, instantly compelling image.
Original lithographic poster, uncensored, linen-backed, measuring 32.5 x 23.6 inches, in A- condition (margin restoration). An emblematic Belle Époque work at the crossroads of poster art, popular literature, and the illustrated press.
