The Théâtre de la Chauve-Souris poster is a rare document. It is in perfect condition with only slight traces of folding and no restoration. The poster has been washed and linen backed.
It bears witness to the Russian artist Sergei Soudeikine's time in France at the very beginning of the 1920s. It showcases the artistic cabaret model that would influence Parisian cabarets and music halls. Printed using lithography, it bears the mark of the Parisian printer Loubok.
The Théâtre de la Chauve-Souris was founded in 1908 in Moscow by Nikita Balieff. It was a satirical cabaret known for blending theater, music, dance, parody, and pantomime. There was great freedom in tone and form. The aesthetics were particularly refined, featuring short sketches and songs, often without realistic sets but focusing on rhythm, performance, and imagination. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the troupe left Moscow for Paris.
