Vintage Travel Posters

Original vintage posters from the 1880s to the 1960s were commissioned by the tourism industry to promote local travel destinations such as the first established seaside and ski resorts, racing circuits, train stations, casinos, parcs, forests, the Châteaux of France and around the world, and ways of getting there whether by regional rail lines, the first great flight connections, long trips on cruise or cargo ships.
Travel-themed original posters from the 1890s to the 1970s are sorted into three main categories: railways, the navy and maritime tourism and airlines. The original railway posters celebrate France’s extensive rail network and its diverse destinations. French cities, smaller towns, famous sites, racing circuits, seaside destinations, ski resorts… the list goes on. It also takes the view to places beyond its borders, such as Switzerland and Italy, or Great Britain and Belgium and as far as to the Mesopotamian reaches on board the Orient-Express. Original maritime posters include shipping lines that used to link French colonies and overseas territories with the mainland, as well as international shipping companies such as the White Star or the Cunard Line. Finally, the advent of the airline. While airline posters started to appear as early as the 1910s, our collection focuses mainly on the colourful delights of the posters produced between the ‘30s and ‘60s.
