Original Poster Aéromaritime - Africa, by A. Brenet - Circa 1950
Created around 1950 by A. Brenet, this original poster was commissioned by the Aéromaritime company, the airline branch of Chargeurs Réunis, to promote routes linking Dakar to Pointe-Noire in French West Africa. Printed in lithography by Mont-Louis in Paris, it perfectly captures the postwar advertising aesthetic and the colonial imagination of its time.
The composition strikes with its graphic intensity: a male figure, bare-chested, with a headband and drawn bow, contrasts sharply with a seaplane soaring majestically through the sky. The juxtaposition of symbolic tradition and modern aviation creates a visual tension that is both striking and ambiguous.
This original lithograph poster, measuring 38.8 x 24.4 inches, is linen-backed and in A condition. It stands as a valuable and now historical testament to the visual communication strategies of major French maritime and airline companies on the African continent.
