Original Poster - Kasbah de Tamdart, by Jacques Majorelle - 1928
Created in 1928 by Jacques Majorelle for the Société de Géographie du Maroc, this original poster is a pictorial celebration of the High Atlas Mountains and the vernacular architecture of Morocco. Printed in lithography by the Baconnier studio in Algiers, it reflects both the ethnographic and artistic gaze of a painter deeply captivated by the landscapes and people of the Maghreb.
The composition depicts the Kasbah of Tamdart, a massive and majestic structure set against the backdrop of red-hued mountains. Its imposing volumes and decorated surfaces reveal the refinement of Berber construction. In the foreground, a procession of armed men and proud horsemen highlights the dignity and nobility of the local tribes, captured in a moment that blends daily life with symbolic staging.
The muted palette - ochres, soft greens, slate blues - imbues the whole scene with a hushed atmosphere, as though the light is filtered through dust and time. The influence of Orientalism is perceptible, yet transfigured by Majorelle’s modern graphic style.
Linen-backed, in a 39.6 x 24.8 inch format, and in A+ condition: a rare and precious work at the crossroads of colonial art and travelogue illustration by the famed painter of Marrakech.
