Original Poster *La Route Bleue*, by A. M. Cassandre - 1929
Created in 1929 by A. M. Cassandre, this original poster promotes the luxury coach service linking London, Paris, and the Côte d’Azur - an initiative jointly operated by the Chemins de Fer du Nord, PLM, and the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits. Printed by L. Danel in Lille.
The strikingly disciplined composition depicts a road vanishing into infinity beneath a double row of stylized black trees rendered with bold geometric precision. At the center, a piercing blue sky cuts a shaft of light, like a corridor heading south - a promise of travel and luxury. The horizon recedes, the rhythm of the trunks pulses: everything in this image suggests speed, comfort, and refinement.
The minimalist drawing contrasts with the typographic impact, as the words “Route Bleue” assert themselves in bold, two-tone capitals. The limited palette - midnight blues, deep blacks, and bright whites - reinforces a modern aesthetic that is both functional and poetic.
Linen-backed, measuring 39.2 x 24.4 inches, in A+ condition. An Art Deco graphic icon, and a landmark piece in Cassandre’s oeuvre, where the road becomes legend.
